Assessment using functional analysis approach which involves direct observations across variety of settings, data collection on topography and frequency of behaviour (ABC’S), functional analysis interviews and motivational assessment scales. Following the assessment a formulation is developed with family which helps to inform behaviour support plan. Plan is then shared with family and key stakeholders with some initial support to implement strategies.
General themes within plans might include:
- Developing areas of skill deficit
- Supporting young people to develop functional communication
- Increasing access to meaningful activities
- Drawing on behaviour modification techniques such as positive reinforcement, chaining etc.
Typically this approach is used for young people who have a learning disability who present with behaviours that challenge that have been difficult to understand.
